Diablo 3 Weekly Wallpaper #17

Posted 2nd Dec 2008 10:51 AM by Flux

The number of submissions to our Diablo III wallpaper gallery waxes and wanes, and with no new source material from Blizzard for a while, the gallery saw just one new addition over the past week. It’s a nice piece though, with HolyKnight returning to his Fiery Runes series, this time featuring the concept art of a mysterious monster known only as the Mistress of Pain. Click it. Love it.

Ask Blizzard!

Posted 1st Dec 2008 03:48 PM by Leord

You might have read through the Diablo 3 Basics page and every single article, interview and panel in the Media Coverage Archive, but you will still find that there are so many things that Blizzard have not said about Diablo 3 yet. We could give all this information out if we just had the right question to ask Blizzard…

Are you at all interested in getting your questions through to the D3 Team? We have started an “Ask Blizzard” thread in the Diablo 3 forum, and we want your ponderings, opinions and questions!

Overseer Respawns

Posted 1st Dec 2008 08:10 AM by Elly

The latest Flagship Studio refugee to find a new home is Phil Shenk. He along with Kevin Klemmick, who served as Senior Software engineer at Flagship, have formed Gravity Bear. Phil was one of the founders of the now defunct Flagship Studios and before that he was Lead Character Artist on Diablo II and Art Director on Lord of Destruction. If his name sounds familiar for other reasons it’s because Shenk the Overseer is named after him although he’s not a whip cracking disciplinarian like his namesake.

Gravity Bear is yet to announce any titles in production.

D3 in the Lycos Top 50

Posted 28th Nov 2008 11:12 AM by Flux

Lycos has posted their list of the most searched-for games and toys for 2008, and as you might expect, Diablo III is high on the list. D3 was the 4th most searched-for video game of 2008, which is pretty impressive when you consider how far we still are from release, or even beta testing. World of Warcraft came in 6th, for comparison. Here are the top 5 games; see the Lycos 50 page for the full list of search terms in games, toys, and various other categories.

    1. RuneScape
    2. Halo 3
    3. Final Fantasy XIII
    4. Diablo III
    5. Grand Theft Auto IV

Diablo 3 Demo Leak Rumours

Posted 28th Nov 2008 10:38 AM by Leord

Just a general note: Some Diablo 3 fansites have reported on a Diablo 3 Demo leak, supposedly from WWI 2008. First off, the supposed playable "demo" is the gameplay video split into parts and uploaded to Rapidshare. Secondly, several of the sites that are trying to get hits for it are deliberately serving trojans.

I assume everyone is smart enough not to fall for such things anyway, but still: Unless you hear it from official sources (or here), it's a fake or a hoax to hack you.

Jay Wilson Interview by Play.tm

Posted 27th Nov 2008 05:28 PM by Leord

While Games Radar might have been quite late with their preview, they are now officially beaten by Play.tm in terms of publishing content late. The gaming site managed to hold on to their Jay Wilson interview for almost 5 months, namely Games Convention Leipzig in August! Well, having said that, it's a quite interesting interview, and it's well worth a read. For one thing, Jay is answering a tiny bit more about the team exchange that took place when Blizzard North (mostly) left the company:

Blizzard Quote: (Source)
How long has the game been in the works?

Almost six years. Although I've been working on it for almost three. In my team there are a few guys who have been involved the whole time, but the majority of the team has been involved for two to three years.

Is this in part because of the creative issues that had to be resolved earlier in the project?

Yeah. I think the first issue... I can't speak much about Blizzard North because its before my time, but one of the biggest issues was that because of the values of Blizzard in general its really hard to have an external creative group, separate from the core group. There's too much that's done; sound, cinematics and story - so much of its done at core Blizzard HQ that they learnt the lesson that all groups should be internal. That's the only way that all the philosophy gets passed on. That's the conclusion they came to when they tried to bring Blizzard North into the main HQ arena. I think they offered 46 of the 49 positions... to move down. It wasn't that they didn't want Blizzard North involved, it was that they said "you guys don't function well away from us". So a lot of the team came down.

Since then, we've had creative struggles... trying to find a game worthy of the Diablo 3 name.

Games Radar Diablo III Hands-On

Posted 27th Nov 2008 05:10 PM by Leord

In an attempt to get the award for slowest preview of the year, Games Radar has released their BlizzCon 2008 Diablo 3 impressions. Not only that, but they seem to have turned down the press PC stations in favour of cutting the 2 hour queue lines on the show floor, having fun enraging some fans. On the other hand, it's quite quiet on Diablo III news right now, and they do apply decent writing to the article, so head over there for the full thing. Here is an excerpt:

Blizzard offered up a generous single dungeon demo at the event, which inevitably became a playground of charnel pursuits for the hundreds of attendees that managed to score a playthrough. It wouldn’t be Diablo without fully randomized dungeons. During our three playthroughs, the game generated a unique dungeon every time, with few reoccurrences. And just looking at the dozens of monitors around us, we knew immediately what everybody’s favorite class was. The Wizard, which Blizzard unveiled only an hour before…

DiabloWiki November

Posted 27th Nov 2008 11:51 AM by Leord

While this last week has suffered from many contributors being busy one way or another, we’ve still had a few major updates, and the month of November has been absolutely Wikitastic! Remember that you can make it even better with a typo fix, or lore update yourself. Manuals and a lot of other lore information are already available in the Diablo 3 Wiki to start writing! Besides some major updates earlier this week, the following articles have been the focus in the past few days. We’ve bolded the new or majorly updated ones:

Skill runes - Critical hit - Inventory - Western Kingdoms - Body Armor - Anthony Rivero
Barbarian - Spirit Skill Tree - Sanctuary

As for the Diablo 2 Wiki, it’s primarily Widus’ work, who is one of the most reliable and active DiabloWiki contributors:
  • Prefixes - One of the biggest parts of Diablo 2 is under way to be fixed.
  • Suffixes - ...and suffixes are of couse the end part of that.
  • Throwing - Item stat updates, and patch 1.12 changes.
  • Daggers - Item stat updates.
  • Javelins - ...and more item stat updates...

There has also been several other minor updates like that of the Giant Mosquito and Mephisto, and there has been updates by a few more people as well. For both the wikis, we should all thank Widus, HegemonKhan, Asteria, Mrguy, RedSky, Jeda, Milkman and IchiroMihara for taking time out to help the rest of us with keeping all the Diablo info up to date!

For the whole of November, the updates have been too many to list here, but some of the major updates have been:

Thank you all who make it possible to call DiabloWiki the BEST resource for Diablo material on the web! Thanks Widus, Zero80, Melianor, Bandreus, Azymn, Shayagor, Mizantrop, Mouseman, Elmer92413, HegemonKhan, Orphan, Pubrulz, Tehc, Perplex, Mrguy, RedSky, Jeda, Milkman, IchiroMihara, Asteria, Delmion, Jeda, Royard, Lionheart2004, Artofkenpo, Vipermagi, Centipede t, Wisdomseeker, Solomir, UnknownCosmoS, CampbellSoup and Hemlock!

Dreamhack 2008: No Diablo 3 Demo Hands-On

Posted 26th Nov 2008 06:43 PM by Medievaldragon

Diablo III Forum Rep Aguilar replied to a fan there won’t be a Diablo 3 demo at Dreamhack this year—the LAN party competition held in Sweden through November 27-30th. Blizzard will offer Starcraft II and Wrath of the Lich King Hands-on gameplay to attendees. You can find the Telia and Blizzard booth in Hall C right next to DreamArena. It’s a pity not to see Diablo 3 demo there. However, if you are going to be an attendee, you may ask the developers questions related to Diablo 3. Are you attending Dreamhack this year?  Let us know.

Blizzard Quote:
Aguilar: I’m afraid you won’t play Diablo 3 at Dreamhack this year, but you’re right saying Starcraft 2 and WotLK will be in our luggage!
And yes, members of the European community team will be there to answer your questions.
