A Fifth Blizzard Game In The Works ... An Unannounced Game - March 2009

UPDATE!
March 24. New update here

It looks like Blizzard Entertainment got yet another game in early development.  If you are a programmer with awesome skills and experience in the game industry, you have the opportunity to join the best international game studios and all what comes attached to that: good salary, benefits, reputation and access to the in-house gym and cafeteria to boot.

Thus far Blizzard is developing five new games:
1. Starcraft II
2. Diablo III
3. New World of Warcraft expansion
4. Next-Gen MMO
5. A new unannounced game (New IP?)

The fifth brand-new unannounced game surfaced last week.  I don’t recall any executives commenting about the existence of a fifth game before, but certainly two executives have hinted interest in a new IP.

The first time a new IP was hinted was as far back as 2006, when Paul Sams said the following to Gamespot:

Blizzard Quote:
Paul Sams: “I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new franchise from us at some time in the future; there’s certainly a desire to do so.”

Two years later, on August 2008, Paul Sams mentioned the Next-Gen MMO was in production, but he also mentioned interest in a new IP.  That’s twice he mentions a new IP—two years apart.  In that case, this new game that surfaced last week could fit the bill of a new IP. Or it is a new WoW Expansion. This is mere “rumor / conjecture” at this point. Blizzard has made no official announcements. However, I remind you that it was Paul Sams who first talked about three unannounced games a few years ago and lo and behold—Starcraft II and Diablo III were announced later, plus the Next-Gen MMO has been confirmed—although its title remains secret. If Paul Sams says a new IP is something they would like to explore—hear the Man.

Blizzard Quote:
Paul Sams: What I will say, though, is that the idea of a new franchise is very intriguing to employees of the company. Are we ever going to release a new one? I would absolutely say we will at some point. I just don’t know when that day will be quite yet.

Blizzard is actively looking for programmers for this fifth mysterious game and it is not listed under the Next-Gen MMO category.  It is under the category titled Unannounced Project .... What little we know about this brand-new game is that —it is run on the World of Warcraft engine for the time being, and doesn’t use SDL.  Blizzard wants your resume if you meet the requirements to join the team behind this fifth game::

It’s probably just the next WoW expansion, I wouldn’t get too excited.

@Mikeztarp
The work-ad says: “This is your chance to get in on the ground floor of a dynamic and focused team working on a brand new project.”

The next WoW-expansion is hardly “a brand new project” ? I think the next WoW-exp has been in production ever since the Wrath of the Lich King. So I think its a new franchise!

I would think it is due time that blizzard did come out with a new franchise. Correct me if I am wrong but they only have 4 franchises that I am aware of. Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft, Lost Vikings. I tie in WOW to the Warcraft franchise obviously.

It is great to see a new IP come from Blizzard because everyone loves new and fresh ideas. This also leads me to belive that their next-gen mmo will be based around either Starcraft or Diablo. Let the speculating begin because it is going to be interesting. smile

No, I doubt it’s an expansion.

“focus on client systems”
“to focus on game rules systems”

Besides what was said above, new “game rules systems” are rarely something looked for in a simple expansion, neither do an expansion need a new game client either. (that it’s a *new* client being inherited from that they are planning a brand new project)

I don’t really think it’s a Diablo/Starcraft MMO, since they could compete with their other franchises in development now that might still be new and fresh by the time this game is getting coverage. I don’t think that’s necessarily a good idea, business-wise.

Not to mention their already three parts of Diablo, three Warcraft games, and WoW… They NEED something new and exciting IMHO.

- 3. New World of Warcraft expansion
There isn’t any new WoW expansion announced.
I personaly doubt there will be an nex expansion. There are enough other projects and Bliz isn’t a company which are producing massivly games, rather few good games.

netmoe, it was said many times in different interviews there were plans to launch an expansion every year. That means a WoW expansion is in the works even if it has not been announced.  If the books are any indication, the next expansion will have as theme the Emerald Dream—or something + the Emerald Dream. There is a book titled World of Warcraft: Stormrage by Richard A. Knaak.  Chris Metzen and Micky Neilson revealed what this book was about in our recent interview at the New York Comic Con 2009 held on February 6.

@Deadflag: In PR talk, anything remotely new can be called “brand new”. raspberry But I agree that it sounds a little more… well, new, than an expansion. So when I look at the job offers, my best guess is its the unnanounced MMO. I really don’t think Blizzard will develop five games at once, unless they hire a lot more; and we know for a fact that they’re starting to get serious about it (Jeff Kaplan himself recently joined the team).

@Mikeztarp: Except this job listing is not under the Next-Gen MMO category.  It is mysteriously listed under its own category titled: Unannounced. So that means it is not the same game as the Next-Gen MMO where Kaplan joined.
