Art Debate Rages

Personally I thought Diablo 3 looked fantastic when it was shown at the WWI and the colour palette being used was certainly not an issue in my eyes. That being said, this week has seen the art debate rage on in the Diablo community, some happy with the path Blizzard are taking and some really quite worried about it. The D3 controversy gallery has been rather busy here at diii.net with the examples of palettes that may or not work depending on your view on the issue.

The mainstream press have also been on the case again with Kotaku posting an article entitled Diablo III Art, Inspired By Titan Quest which looks at the two games and shows some of the similarities.

MTV have also been following this ‘art story’ and posted a lengthy piece which includes quotes from Blizzard’s Keith Lee on the subject. Here’s a snip from that.

Blizzard Quote:
“What we also tried to do is create very clean textures so that you can really focus. It’s a stylized feel and in that sense, it’s very sort of a Blizzard philosophy. It’s just really pushing the envelope in terms of the visuals so that everyone is excited about how everything looks. We think that ‘Diablo III’ is going to be better in so many different ways. We’re just building and improving upon the the first and second ‘Diablo’ games.”

Nonsense, I agree with the people who want a darker (less cleaner) version of the game. Where is the gore when you need it.

It does look dark though, I understand what people mean but the game does look dark in the areas where it should. At least it did on the big screen smile

I very much like the new graphic design. First of all, people don’t seem to understand that we’re only seeing what are probably the first two zones in the game. You don’t want all your zones to look the same… it gets pretty monotonous. Also, you don’t want the easy starting areas to be super-gothic and spattered with blood… you kind of want to save that for later. One of the things that I thought was a total failure of the art direction of the Tim Burton "Sleepy Hollow" film was that everything was so dark and desaturated and ominous… and I mean everything, even the places that were supposed to be normal and safe. So when you finally enter the haunted forest that’s supposed to be really scary, you’re so desensitized to the color palette that there’s nothing remarkable about it.

Fortunately, Blizzard’s art direction is not done by committee. They know what they’re doing.

As many have said before, which i completely agree with, "Add a darkness/hue/slider" and everybody wins. No more back and forth arguements over which is "better".

I am ok with the current graphics if they are meant to increase the constract between the relatively "friendly" area’s and the baddies amoung the zones smile

It has been the same for Starcraft 2 really. People found the graphics to be "to colorful". While I agreed to some extend I also like the style.

People are crazy… the game has just been announced and all they can do is say what they dislike..  rather than express joy. This isn’t Diablo 2.  I’m sure they would have been pleased with 2D grainy low res characters on a black screen.

The length of Art and Design knowledge of these nay sayers could fit on the end of a pencil.

Over contrasted, sepia tone images done in Photo Shop do not make for a good argument.

Diablo 2 was very different from Diablo 1. It had lots of bright colors and bright environments. Art was totally different as well. It will be the same with Diablo 3. The game looks beautiful, and I am sure we will see more darker and gloomy areas as well. There is a lot they can do, with day and night cycle and weather effects, as well.

Aranock hit the nail on the head with the hue/saturation slider.  That way, people who prefer the Gears of War-ish “fifty shades of gray & one of red” color scheme can appease themselves and everybody else can leave it as it was designed.  Or you could amuse yourself by slaying purple or aqua hellspawn. 

I was trying to think of a Bob Ross joke here but I couldn’t manage it.

Lets not mention that the game hasn’t even made it to the ALPHA stage of development…

Or the fact we saw a small part of the game or anything like that..

The green/blue hues, especially in the dungeons, are definitely over the top.

I think the main problem people are having with the outdoor environments (and this is obvious in several of the colourized shots) is that it is too soft-focus and mystical looking, instead of sharp and gritty like both D1 and D2 were. The colours are a little bright and cheery too, but I think that’s a secondary problem to the soft focus look.
