Bashiok on Skill Synergies

Posted 7th May 2009 10:57 AM by Flux

Just one Bashiok reply today, in which he pretty well puts to rest the idea of skill synergies returning in Diablo III.

Blizzard Quote:

Are synergies dead, or am I making assumptions that they won’t be included because of the new prerequisites system?

I desperately hope they are nowhere near the drawing board. They messed D2 up so bad it’s not even funny. Compared to 1.08 and 1.09, the PvP is barely even playable, and everyone is the same build these days. You already know whether you’ve won or lost before you even fight, so most people don’t even bother.

I feel sorry for anyone who never got a chance to play at least 1.09 on closed BNet - a time when PvP lasted more than 0.5 seconds and you never knew what your opponent might throw at you. Those were some really fun times - fun times I hope to see resurrected in D3!

If anyone has a link to anything tangible on this I’d be grateful if you pointed me toward it.

Bashiok: Synergies aren’t being planned for nor are they expected.

It’s sort of a funny question, because broken down you’re essentially asking “Are the skill trees in Diablo III going to be boring and require incentive to spend points in skills no one wants?”

Ideally the answer to that is no. smile
There are some other things going on too that make sure synergies even less of a necessity. Clear separation of active and passive skills, respecs, ... and MORE!

I agree, synergies messed up the game badly.

But I know D3 skills will be made from scratch so they don’t have to try to improve an already flawed skill system that D2 had.

Thank the gods… nothing like wasting skill points in a skill you’ll never use just to get a boost to another skill.

happy to learn that there are no synergies and a more difinitive line between passive and active skills (I hope that means full separation, as in you get 1 point for each per level…)

Kinda sad to hear about respecs though, I guess it probably fits with their design strategy though.

I’m not too happy about respecs either. Because D2 leveled so fast (compared to WoW), if you wanted to try something else, you could just make a new char. With respecs, you will probably only ever make one char of each class.

And in D2 it didn’t really matter much if you put one skill in the wrong place, since there was such a huge amount anyway. I hope this huge amount of skillpoints will be in the game again.

I don’t like the idea of respecs at all. Respecs don’t belong in a RPG. On minute you are a melee wizard. The next you can’t melee and are a mean spellslinger. Nope, don’t like it at all.

1.09 has alot of problem in its own, so I’m not sure what the guy is talking about, really. Back then, win/lose is entirely determined by class.

And I agree, respecialization does not belong in a RPG.

Glad to know respecs are in.
We do not even know yet how fast the characters will level, respecs are a time-saver and I began liking them more and more since playing TQ. GW is all about respecs too, with possibly the best system I’ve ever seen.
Also, even WoW has respecs, and being it canon MMORPG I can see why they’re going to be included, though I kind of agree with 5zigen, Baboon, Grumpy Old Wizard and Tarnished Hope from an exclusively theoretical standpoint. If they tell me you can go 1 -> 90% of max clev in 12 hours then respecs are not needed, until then I guess I’ll be very happy to have them.

No sinergy trees earn my thumbs-up, I always tought that sinergies were a nice try that horribly backfired on D2 as of 1.10.
