Blizzard Confirms Fourth Title

Posted 2nd Jul 2008 03:57 PM by Rushster

We all knew Blizzard was busy on a third title, Project Hydra, which turned out to be Diablo 3 but over the past few months there has also been talk of a fourth title in development. Based on the jobs being posted at Blizzard it is thought to be an MMORPG. Rob Pardo has confirmed that there is indeed a fourth title in the works.

Blizzard Quote:
A few months ago you offered a job on the official Blizzard webpage, Considering a next gen MMO… A community manager added that its about a game that hasn’t been announced yet. Is there any new information on that or is Diablo the mentioned next gen MMO?

Rob Pardo: No, its obviously not, since it is not an MMO! We have another development team, that is…

So there is still one project?

Rob Pardo: Yea, there is still one “unknown” project…

Combine this quote with another statement made by Blizzards Paul Sams, chief operating officer at Blizzard Entertainment:

[blue=http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19217]Blizzard has very strong IP, but it also seems like all of it was created in the last century.

PS: First of all, that’s true that we’ve not introduced any new franchises this century. I think what it really comes down to is, we ask the teams what they want to make next.

I think the folks at our company are concerned, if they’re going to do a new franchise, that it be worthy – and that it be something that is equivalent or better than what we’ve done before, because they don’t want to do a franchise that’s not.

These are three of the best-selling franchises of all time, and very well-loved. So you’ve got a pretty high bar of trying to figure out what those franchises might be.

What I will say, though, is that the idea of a new franchise is very intriguing to employees of the company. Are we ever going to release a new one? I would absolutely say we will at some point. I just don’t know when that day will be quite yet.[/blue]

Possibly a console game?
They were hinting at it.

There’s enough to keep gamers happy for the next 6 years with Blizzard!  Lich King, SC2, Diablo 3 and the xpacks for those.  Exciting stuff.

It’s enough to give you a geekasm.

Unless something has changed since April, then no.

Multiplayer: StarCraft Ghost was noticeably absent. Its not technically canceled?

Pearce: It never was technically canceled. Its just a focus thing for us right now. Weve got a finite amount of development resources and a lot of different things that we want to focus on so theres always the possibility, but right now were spending our time on World of Warcraft and our expansion Wrath of the Lich King and StarCraft II.

Did anyone else catch that?

Another interesting statement made by Rob Pardo is that he specifically says that Diablo 3 is NOT a MMO.

As for the project: I think all options are pretty much open:
- A revived, refubished version of SC: Ghost (still not official cancelled)
- A Diablo MMO (why not)
- A viking related MMO (might be fun, but I doubt it comes close to the other brands, so unlikely)
- A new franchise MMO (total freedom for the devs)

I think the only thing that is pretty much off the table is WOW2.

Personally my bets are on a new franchise.

I don’t see blizzard creating a new MMO atm, not with WotLK in production - would be a competitor to World of Warcraft, which seeing as they are making an expansion for it, is not on the way out of Blizzard’s plans.

Also, with both a new Diablo and Starcraft installement in development already I don’t see it being anything from those franchises either. Would be a bit ironic, the fans having cried out for a starcraft/diablo sequel for so long and when they finally announce them they make 2? I don’t think so.
