| The first ever Blizzard Entertainment Global Writing Contest is now complete!
We would just like to say how impressed we are by the overwhelming number of high-quality entries we received. Ranging from epic to earnest and hilarious to horrific, your stories conveyed true devotion, passion, and insight. The judges went through several rounds before selecting the finalists, but in the end only the big man himself, Chris Metzen, could choose the winning entry. We would like to thank all of the contest entrants for the time and effort that they put into their stories. It is always a pleasure to see our fans demonstrate their immense creativity and talent! The grand prize winner will be flown to Blizzard Entertainment headquarters to meet the Blizzard creative writing staff, and will be the owner of a brand new shiny (and pointy) Frostmourne replica sword by Epic Weapons. You can guess which game world some (Most? I don’t play WoW, so I might be missing some obvious tips.) of them are set in by the titles, but many are ambiguous. As the announcement says, Blizzard will be posting some of them online, but not all, and we might only get excerpts. It’s an interesting issue; if someone wrote a great story that happened to accurately forecast Blizzard’s pre-existing plans for the plot of a future game expansion, they’re not going to post that one, for obvious reasons. By the same token, the authors surrendered all rights to their work by submitting it, so Blizzard can take any idea and use it in any way they see fit, without attribution or any sort of payment.
I wrote about this issue in more detail in a post here, in our D3 fan fiction forum, and I’d welcome comment or disagreement. Also in that forum, I’ve now posted my own entry to this contest. (Which did not win, and probably wasn’t even a valid submission. Details in a post following the story.) We’d love to host other Diablo short stories, whether you wrote them for this contest or otherwise, so head to the D3 FFF and join the fun.
