Blizzard Does Not Have all Classes and Act 1 Done

Posted 4th Dec 2008 02:17 PM by Leord

There has apparently been a misunderstanding growing from one of the interviews Rob Pardo did at WWI 2008, which would imply that Blizzard have all the classes and most of the game ready to play in their office. Besides the fact that they mentioned the BlizzCon 2008 build as being about a month behind their actual work, some people still think a lot more work is done, and Blizzard is just keeping their great game back to spite the fans. Bashiok tries to clarify by basically saying that “playable” does not really mean it’s good enough to show. In layman terms: they might have non-animated figures without textures and gameplay spells without graphics on an huge Act 1 without terrain or textures for most of it.

Well, most likely they would have a lot of partial things done a bit of everywhere, but anyone familiar with game development would know this. The whole point is, that Blizzard is not holding back things from us because they want to point and laugh at us, but because they are busy working on the game. Things like WWI and BlizzCon takes a lot of time, and if it’s a bit quiet right now, then that’s just great news for getting the actual GAME out quicker.

Blizzard Quote:
Just to clarify this was an interview with Rob at the announcement of the game at WWI, and just to avoid any conclusions drawn without watching the video here’s the quote:

“I think most of the other classes are actually playable back at the home office, but I’m not going to tell you about them today. And most of, kind of the first act, is also pretty playable, but we still have a long ways to go.”

So you’re quite a bit off from “all classes” and “all of act one” being finished. It’s really insubstantial information though, because anyone that understands the Blizzard development process and core values we’re all about iterating. It’s not done until it’s done.

As far as information releases go and current development everyone on the team is working really hard on the game, and it’s progressing really well, but we’re just kind of in a weird spot as far as new information releases go right now.

That’s understandable. smile They have all the time in the world to complete this masterpiece, and we’re not going to rush them.

It is good that bashiok clarified this as since WWI that misinterpretation of the quote from Rob pardo has turned into so-called fact.

I think they must be spending so much time doing that… Putting out fires as it were. I mean, people interpret anything they say the way they want it, and lots of fans are very sensitive to webpages overhyping the topic.

Not really pissed on webpages doing it a little bit, but people taking things in without thinking is slightly annoying…

It’s amazing how much Blizzard have to watch their words.  They need to be absolutely precise and it’s almost mandatory that they add a disclaimer after everything they say.

It’s no wonder they always look so anxious and wary when you talk with them, they’re scared of inadvertantly letting a secret slip.  Or wind, body language isn’t my forte.

the question is really about: how much do you think the have accomplished so far? sounds like they have some sort of “dummy” for each class at least, like the news say, and detailed plans, with lots of textures done for act 1. remember D2, they sure reused a lot of textures with alternate colours, and that cathedral in LA was pretty detailed from the pics and video…

It’s wierd how just reading a few hundred developer diaries and interviews will give you a bit of a better insight, but it’s true!

Plough through the Media Coverage, and you’ll find that you understand the process better. They might have a few mobths more work than they show, but it might just be that X class is missing ALL it’s shoulder pads, even if it has 20 skills done, so they show another class that *looks* more done, to give a better impression. Then they spend X weeks before an event like BlizzCon and polish the stuff they do have so it looks brilliant, and show it, even if that’s all they have at that level. they don’t want to show the char class that is 99% done, but has a fugly face…

They might be almost done with all classes, but they are not ploished enough with textures and animations to be of Blizzard quality, so we’ll see them later. I suspect a press event sometime after X-mas, similar to SC2 last March and WotLK last May, when they will send Flux (and maybe Elly) there to try the fourth class and give raving reviews. Wait and see wink

BUT I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!!!!

I’m beginning to think they unveiled D3 a bit prematurely. It’s been a long time since we’ve got any updates, and now they’re saying they aren’t even as far along as we’ve previously thought.
Maybe they should have waited for 2009.

Didn’t Jay Wilson himself say that most people had moved on working on Act 2? Of course he also said they will do several iterations on the acts to get them really good. But it’s been my understanding that they have Act 1 basically done, and are now working hard on Act 2.

Also, in an interview it was said that Blizzard typically want to announce a game 1-1.5 years before it gets released. Seems they announced Diablo 3 too early if they now want to emphasize that Diablo 3 is ways off.

i know you think that it is all not ready and be out like sometime in next millenium, but really hard part of any gaming is actually codding and game engine, modelling taking less time to polish it all up.

i know this cause i have very trusted source of info about this.

as long as all coding done, modeling could take couple of months, and that’s it, buu yaaah, game on sale raspberry
