BlizzCon 2008 Jeff Frank Pearce Interview

Posted 14th Oct 2008 07:10 AM by Rushster

Blizzard Co-founder Frank Pearce was on hand at Blizzcon to answer quite a few questions from the IncGamers team. Wandering Goblin’s Pig conducted the interview which covers WoW, Diablo 2, SC2 and everything Blizzard related.

Frank commented on the BlizzCon event itself, how they prepare games for events like these, the MMO-inspiration in Diablo 3, WotLK Launch details, D3 development history and philosophy.

In addition to this, we get a few minimal comments on the FOURTH Blizzard project, and that StarCraft II will get the “Eye of Sauron” focused on the game development after WotLK launches. Just like Sigaty said, Battle.net is the great focus, together with Single Player, as the multiplayer aspect is more or less nailed. This is naturally also good news for Diablo 3, which will be heavily centred on co-op and Battle.net. Through the Battle.net we’ll also see achievements at launch of the games, and he denies any current plans of Battle.net fees.

Blizzard Quote:
The Head to head combat, that experience is solid, and were ready. That’s like our foundation. Now we have some very cool ideas we want to do for Battle.net, and some cool ideas we want to do for the single player, that we want to build around it, because we don’t want to just deliver the vanilla RTS experience, we want more for our players.

So, did Frank lend us $100? Watch the video and find out!

Great interview overall, but there was one point that I kinda felt that the interview went off a little. You asked him to ballpark the release of DIII, and he dodged the question.. I wonder if that was intentional on his part or if he genuinely missed it.

I was hoping to hear an idea of how far along they are in the production process, and how soon they expect to be able to make a release announcement. Oh well, looks like I’ll have to wait another few months until the next Blizz event. Maybe there will be more news then.

Here’s to hoping!!!

No worries on the D3 ballpark. We know it’s after the first SC release anyway, but hopefully before the last expansion for it (or 3 years away could be looong). We’ll get a better angle next time =)

Okay, this is a question for the people who attended Blizzcon 2008 and played the demo.

Taking into consideration all the information you’ve gathered, when, in your opinion, do you think the game will come out?

@ iamnotdeadyet

That’s horribly hard to comment on. I remember playing SC2 at Blizzcon last year and saying it would be about a year development. Well, we’re on 1.5 year from there soon…

I’d say 1-2 years, probably. The stuff they have is very detailed, but creating environments is the especially painstaking job, and they have lots of that left, not to mention mobs and class balance. They were not even done with all Wizard models yet, the male one was unavailable, so they also have about 2.5 classes to design with hundreds of armours.

I’d say we can start making proper speculation on it half a year from now, we’ll get a better grasp of the lay of the lands.

Thanks.

My best bet is that the game will be released in 2010. Late 2010 for certain anyway! Even if Blizz have 2.5 classes done so far, they still have 2.5 to develop, to balance and so forth. Besides we dont even know how many acts are playable so far. We have seen only parts of act 1 so far. The other acts might take place in Caldeum, Tur Dulra, Ureh, Skovos Isles and so on…

Decebal, unfortunately, I read somewhere that the area known as “Skovos Isles” will not be playable, I mean, we wont be able to go there, will just be part of the history/narrative and somehow very important. Its a shame because the Artwork of the place looks amazing.

Marduk,

If you read a bit further, it may be in a future game expansion. And it the game lives up to Blizzard’s standards I could do with zillions of them.

I have been coming to this site since they first announced Diablo 2 (diabloii.net).  I remember them giving a release date somewhat early on of ~last quarter 1998 or so. But they missed it by about 18 months/2 years when all was said and done.  So, I would guess Diablo III is a minimum of 2 years away at this point.

I would not recommend holding your breath for this game smile.

Well, it might be less than two years. I heard the SC2 team protested for announcing their game in Korea too early, for the long wait, and that would be about 2 years when it is released. Basically, I think it will be less than 2 years, but not necessarily less by much. 1-2 years anyway.
