Diablo 2 Still Getting Heavy Play

Posted 8th Jan 2009 01:28 AM by Flux

The Nielson rating service has been studying which games and gaming systems gamers actually use (as opposed to which they just buy, which is what most top ten charts measure) and their year end results are out, from them some interesting factoids can be gleaned. The PS2 is the most played console and of course WoW is the most played PC game, but what’s that down below it, in 7th place? Yes, Diablo II. Still the seventh most played game of 2008, more than 7 years after the game’s one and only expansion pack. Here’s the top ten most played PC games; check the link for other charts and more analysis.

“If you build it, they will stay…”

Face it, most games suck. I’d much rather spend my time replaying an ancient game that I really enjoy and get satisfaction out of than slogging through some boring, clunky, poorly developed “Bigger better thing”

I agree.  If I get bored before D3 is released I’ll go pull my NES/SNES out of the closet and play games such as Duck Hunt, Zelda, and Final Fantasy.  I’m certainly not going to purchase anything touted on the “games of 2009” list, including StarCraft II.  With a wife and 4 kids my RTS days are over.  I cannot sit down and get a game in let alone have time to get good.

@ Kunzaito - I agree. I reinstalled my old copy of Pharaoh (http://pharaoh.heavengames.com/) over xmas and have been working my way through that since.  Even though it’s 10 years old and I’ve finished it once I’m enjoying the hell out of it.

The only new things I’ve played are Guitar Hero World Tour which I’ve been playing since xmas - It’s all about the drums!!! - and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (for a complete change of pace) which isn’t a new title either really.

There’s nothing new on that list, if I have the release dates correct:

CAll of Duty 4 - Nov 2007
Halo: Combat Evolved - Sept 2003
The Sims - Feb 2000
The Sims 2 - Sept 2004
Runescape - Jan 2001
Team Fortress 2 - Oct 2007
Counter-Strike - Nov 2000
Counter-Strike: Source - Oct 2004

It’s fantastic to see Diablo II in that list though.  It’s a quality title and deserve the longevity.

I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised. We’re all still here right? And many of us have come back to it after years away.

The fact is that there’s no better simple sword and sorcery game out there, thanks to its responsiveness. There’s some broken aspects, such as the way items are dealt out, but it’s still gonna be a big ask to improve it. Good luck Blizzard!

I still play Diablo, Diablo II, and Hellfire; all three on a regular basis.  And lately, when I’ve yearned, temporarily, for something different, I still have my Atari 2600 and 5200 systems, as well as Namco’s 50th Anniversary collection for the PC, which includes Galaxian, and Galaga—the two games for which I bought the compendium.

I say “BAH!” to most of the contemporary games and consoles.

The only games I’m looking forward to currently are D3 and Battlefield 3 (if it ever actually exists), because most games don’t interest me enough to keep playing them for very long.  D2 I’ve been playing since its release and though it’s been a few months since I last played it I’m planning on reinstalling it and LoD tonight and play for a little while.

And ‘a little while’ when it comes to D2 generally ends up being ‘all night’. wink

And LOL @ WoW.  I’ve never played it, but what a juggernaught Blizzard made.  You know how they have a Secret Cow Level in D2?  They should have a Cash Cow level in D3, and it should just drop you into WoW.
