Diablo III - Monster Health Display Changed

Posted 23rd Jun 2009 08:35 PM by Medievaldragon

In a forum post today, Bashiok replied to a player who was unhappy with the health bars and name tags appearing over the heads of every monster. The fan thinks they’re distracting and unnecessary. Bashiok said:

Blizzard Quote:
I think we essentially agree with you. The floaty ‘above creature’ health bars raised a few different concerns and they’ve since been changed. Health bars for uniques and bosses are displayed at the top, and health bars for everything else are displayed at the bottom (both stationary). It works well, it’s all out of the way but still accessible if needed and more importantly you can keep an eye on boss/unique health as well as any lesser minions you happen to be fighting.

Check out the previous form of this display on a unique monster in this image of the Siegebreaker. Compare that to the (now eliminated) view of it over a regular monster. Both images are from the WWI gameplay movie in June 2008.

I suppose health only really matters for Uniques + Superuniques.. But what about immunities? Diablo 1 had a really cool feature which wasn’t in Diablo 2 as well - the number of them you’ve killed! I loved watching that little number go up - 1, 10, 20, 500… I suppose that’s impossible now too, as is a difficulty gauge for any given monster à la neverwinter nights. No big deal though I guess!

dragonhelmuk, I miss that a lot too. But the good news is that, according to JW, there’s going to be a robust statistic window in the game to track things like, oh I don’t know, crit rate? Not much to ask. wink

GuardianHadriel, that’s what I thought too lol
I had a feeling they were going to change that. I’d still like to only have health bars for rares/uniques/bosses at the top but maybe there’ll be an option for that.

Dunno if I like this… I just hate to move my vision from the action to either top or bottom of screen :(

Well I guess as dragonhelmuk said.. it doesn’t matter in the normal monsters. With superuniques you prolly have more time to look at the health.

You should be keeping an eye on the bottom of the screen anyway, as that’s where your health, mana/fury, potions, skills etc are displayed.

Why not keep the health indicator in the same part of the screen so you don’t have to keep flipping between top right and bottom depending on who you have selected?  Just keep the boss/unique at the bottom also, same place as the regular monster.  The graphics of it can be reduced and colour could play a larger role in distinguising it from the regular monsters’ indicator.
