Diablo III News Roundup

This week’s editorial about the demise (or not) of PC Gaming comes from Popular Science. Their verdict is… not! They admit that consoles are taking a lot of the market share, but they point out the popularity of MMOs, that big games like Diablo III will still sell millions, and that casual and free games are hugely popular.

In related news, this article from the Calgary Herald proclaims that gaming is recession-proof, and points to continued strong sales despite the worldwide economic downturn. (Sadly, a counter point isn’t hard to find.)

And finally, MMOSite.com speculates on which entertainment properties might next get the MMO treatment. Blizzard’s mystery MMO is the biggest fish in the pond, but as they point out, World of Diablo seems unlikely with Diablo III under development. World of Starcraft? Or how about non-Blizzard MMOs set in Terminator, Underworld, or Halo?

You can’t compare the demise of coin-op’s to the PC, they both serve different purposes.

As well as the reasons the author cited a nod should go in the direction of online bingo and poker. I don’t know what the exact figures are but I had the tv on during the day the other day (I was waiting in for a plumber, honest) and every ad break was full of bingo this and poker that. Last time I watched daytime tv it was dominated by ‘consolidate your loans’ and ‘sue them all’ adverts. The market must be huge to attract that level of advertising. Neither of those are gaming as we know it but they’re both reasons the PC will continue to be regarded as something to spend your free time on. I have a fair few consoles but it’s PC for me, even though I have a projector for my consoles I only really use them for Guitar Hero and previously Wii stuff which I grew bored of quickly once the novelty wore off.
