Paul Sams on Blizzard’s New MMO and Game Development

Posted 18th Aug 2008 06:07 PM by Leord

VentureBeat have posted a Q&A with Paul Sams about Blizzard and game development, especially in the light of the Activision-Blizzard merger. He answers and comments on a number of questions, including the big question mark of the unannounced MMO. That question naturally gets no more than a comment, but interesting never the less:

[BLUE=“http://venturebeat.com/2008/08/18/qa-with-paul-sams-blizzard-entertainments-chief-operating-officer-on-post-merger-life-2/”]VB: You’ve got StarCraft II, Diablo III, World of Warcraft: The Wrath of the Lich King, and a new MMO?

PS: We have three announced games. You may be referring to the fact that some folks have noticed on our web site that we are hiring for a next-generation MMO. That’s listed on our web site but we aren’t ready to share anything on that yet. We’re hiring for that. We’re also trying to move to best-in-class customer service now.[/BLUE]

Diablo or StarCraft MMO? Or possibly a new franchise? They could develop the MMO parallel to a current development, like with WarCraft III, in which case both Diablo and StarCraft are good bets. Both are getting a lot more complex lore, and both can end in a fashion as to make a transition to MMO easier, story-wise.

The rest of the Q&A session is most of the usual talk about game design from Blizzard. It’s interesting, but also something we have heard many times before.

I believe Blizzard have already stated their new MMO is unrelated to Starcraft, Warcraft or Diablo.

Hopefully also it’ll be unrelated to "forced PvP if you want better gear" because "only microscopic minority are allowed to raid". Then I’m sure I’ll love it.

It would actually be nice with a new franchise, hopefully something one could never imagine.

The only official statements on this are:
1.) Its a "next-gen" MMO
2.) Its NOT World of Warcraft 2
3.) Its in the works parallel to Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and Wrath of the Lich King.

Other then that we don’t know much about this mysterious fourth title.

I think they will follow one of their games in the works.  Be it SC or Diablo.

I hope it’s a whole new franchise. Most guesses I hear say World of Starcraft, since they’ve said it’s not WoW2, and it seems weird to be working on World of Diablo while they’re working on Diablo 3, which they hope will enjoy years of huge popularity. They don’t think D3 will cannibalize their WoW player base, but I don’t see how they could think D3 and WoD wouldn’t compete for playing hours/dollars.

I think SC would be kind of lame; true, at least it’s not another faux-tolkien fantasy sword sorcery world, but they already turned one RTS into an MMO, and they perpetually recycle their own gaming worlds. Something new!

Remember the countdown splashes to Diablo 3?

Each day revealed a picture relating to a franchise. Lost Vikings (compass), Pax Imperia (logo), Starcraft (protoss symbol), Diablo (hel rune), Warcraft (Frostmourne symbol), and the winking smiley.

That’s good enough evidence for me.

"and it seems weird to be working on World of Diablo while they’re working on Diablo 3"

They were working on WoW while working on WC3 if I’m remembering this correctly. MMOs take a considerably long time to develop, compared to a "standard" game. I found it odd that they picked WC over Diablo to make an MMO out of, though. WC has always been their flagship title, though, in my opinion. Diablo was just so much more ripe and viable for the genre.

yeah, but RTS and RPG are different game genres with different fan base. war3 and wow basically served as promotion for each other. D3 and WoD would both be RPGs with tons of overlapping content and chars; cannibalism!
