Questing in Diablo III

Posted 8th Jun 2009 04:08 PM by Leord

The Diablo II experience is different for every single fan of the franchise. For some it's all about the item hunt, for others it's the kills, and yet others relish the story elements of the game. Everyone is right, and there are millions of combinations of what players feel is making Diablo II just the right combination of these three major game features.

In Diablo III, the D3 Team is significantly streamlining the quests with fewer mandatory tasks and more optional content. New additions and ideas are also implemented.

DiabloWiki's contributor's have put together an article on Diablo III quests, detailing everything from quest interface, known quests, new adventures/events and NPC dialogue for starved fanatics. The article has been polished, and is the new Featured Article of the Diablo 3 Wiki.

Only had the time to go through it, now.
Excellent work there, Leord! Thank you very much.

I’m very happy with the path this is taking on the subject of questing. It is very much what I have been defending lately; A game that tries to cover some of the D2 weaknesses but still not remove the hack & slash nature for those who prefer it this way, or simply feel like it that particular day.

The game isn’t forcing the player to choose a playstyle for the sake of adventuring. Instead, it understands D2 had very little to offer for anyone wishing to follow that path and tries to solve this without compromising the cornerstone of an ARPG: fast action.

So a player can choose their playstyle on a particular day, depending on their particular mood, or be offered the choice to play the game as they couldn’t play it before. It’s this open game architecture that I really wish Blizzard to succeed. I do hope they can come with what they are trying to do in the best possible ways.

...

Didn’t know they had abandoned the dialog cutscenes. I’m glad. Those closeups on the character and the NPCs weren’t my cup of tea. 3D Model acting is very hard to achieve right, wastes resources on a game like this that doesn’t need it, dolls up characters that may not fit into the player chosen archetypes, and removes a certain “leave it for your imagination” feeling.

I liked those closeups. I already knew they were gone though.

I think I would agree with Krugar. The cut scenes were kind of cool, but I would probably get bored of them very quick. the zoom in is almost the same anyway, the difference is that you’re still in the “game”, not watching some video.
