The D2 Team Comments on D3

Posted 7th Jul 2008 11:30 PM by Flux

For the past week we’ve been talking to a number of the “ex-Northers,” guys who worked on D1/D2/D2X, who are no longer with Blizzard, and therefore not involved in the production of Diablo III, to get their reactions to the Diablo III announcement. They’ve all had a lot to say, but unfortunately it’s all been off the record. Aside from Max Schaefer’s brief note, there’s been no public comment about Diablo III from anyone who worked on the earlier games in the series. Until now.

Artist Ben Boos worked on D2 and D2X before moving to Flagship Studios. He’s now self employed and doing very well as an author/illustrator, and he was kind (and brave) enough to answer our 7 questions about the Diablo III announcement. Here’s a quote, and you can read the whole interview here.

Diii.net: What do you think of the look of D3? Is it similar in tone/mood/theme to the game you envisioned and worked on at Blizzard North? There has been quite a bit of debate about the graphics, with many players complaining that it’s too bright cartoon/rainbow-colored.

Ben Boos: I thought Diablo 3 looked fantastic at the WWI announcement.

As for the tone: A comparison of D1 to D2 comes to mind. I remember plowing ahead and making those green pastures and meadows in D2, and thinking after the fact oops! The original Diablo was so dark and moody; did I screw up the atmosphere? Then I went and made the bright desert wasteland, and the same potential problems cropped up. But it all worked out in my opinion, because we were able to take the player underground, and to various darker environments. Therefore, I think you cant judge the atmosphere of D3 from a short demo. Who knows what incredible sights await the player of Diablo 3?

I feel so much better after reading this! Finally someone who really knows about the Diablo world and what he’s talking about is commenting and commeting with professional behavior. So far, all we had were cry-babies grinching about the graphics which I seriously don’t find in any way cartoonish. And well, he said it, it was a preview, wait to see what’s next!

Finally, as Boo said : I’m ready for DIII as a fan :D

Yeah. Its nice to get this out there.

It’ll be great. It is a bummer that some people gripe regardless…

Their loss is our gain.

Yes, I still can’t put my finger on why people cry about Diablo III, I’ve been a Blizzard fan back since Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, so this comes quite as a Shock for me. When I saw the live feed and presentation I sat and held my jaw for all I saw on the video and all the juicy information to find out later that a huge admount of people didn’t like what they saw. But as someone here (can’t remember) stated, it’s probably going to take some time for people who’s been playing Diablo II since it’s release to get used to the new looks and ideas of Diablo III. And I totally agree, I however felt like this was the right step to take for the series, I can’t wait to see what they’ll show us next. Just always remember it’s Blizzard, and they always deliver in the end. And people judging the game so harsh when it’s in Pre-Alpha stadium is just sad in my eyes, show a little faith!

Good report.  I can’t believe the detractors are belly aching about graphics.
Here’s a trick I learned with my laptop screen.  If you adjust the angle of your screen somewhat, the diablo play screen becomes much more dark and difficult to see.  Let the dark and dreary fans use that method.  I personally loved the graphics from the preview.

Thanks for the Interview, was great to hear form an original developer and get a glimpse of his insight and thoughts and feelings on the old and now new approach to the series.

Ben sounds like a great down to earth guy, I wish him all the best!

And I agree, the game looks fantastic to me, can’t wait to get her loaded and running!

Regards to All wink
