“Torchlight” Debuts

Posted 25th Apr 2009 03:55 AM by Flux

Runic Games, comprised of the team who were making Mythos at Flagship Studios, including ex-Blizzard North founders and Diablo creators Max and Erich Schaefer, has sent out a press release and the first two screenshots of their new, Diablo-inspired, Mythos-like RPG. It’s called Torchlight.  One screenshot can be seen below; click it to see it full size. Here’s the second one. The art style is interesting; it’s very colorful and lively, and is definitely anime-inspired. I’d go so far as to say that the characters, especially the monsters, are almost super deformed.

I’m sure this will keep me busy until Diablo 3 gets here. They are also going to make TorchLight into a mmo.

It looks, and sounds like Fate (judging by the VERY little we know, I know), which sadly I didn’t get into, on the account that I didn’t really think it was fun. But a single player version out this year? It could be worthwhile.

The style looks pretty cool, I will definately keep my eyes open on this game since the single player version will be out this year (long before Diablo 3). My worries are just the game becomes and feels too “generic”, so to speak. I hope they come up with a good story and world for this game, unique environments, cool game mechanics, fitting monsters, etc. But again, it certainly looks cool judging from the screenshots. I hope the guys at Runic Games succeed.

I don’t really see it as anime-inspired - to me it seems more like a riff on the cartoony look Blizzard favours. It definitely looks cool however you choose the describe it, though, and if it’s really coming out in single player form this year I’ll definitely be looking into it as a possible holdover till Diablo III comes out.

It’s weird how the guys from the old Blizzard North, who were known for their dark style (and who were fairly critical of D3’s more colorful direction) still seem to go even further than Blizzard South with the cartoony graphics. What’s that all about? :D

Anyway, I hope this works better for them than Hellgate did. I would have preferred it if they’d tried something new, though, like having an Old Norse setting for the game rather than the usual pseudo-medieval one—it would no doubt fit an action-oriented game just as well, especially if they’d want the characters to travel into many varying locations etc. But lastly I just gotta say:

GL&HF; guys!

From the art style, I don’t think it’s going to be a serious game. But it could be fun to play.

This looks a bit more Mythos-like than D3-like to me, which makes sense of course. And I loved what Mythos turned into, then BANG, there was no more Mythos. And not because *that* team was doing poorly—if anything, they did better than their parent company who pulled them down into the dirt. So yes, if they play their cards right and don’t fall apart as a company, this could be awesome. smile

It looks like Scholomance to me wink

Besides that, a bit too heavy on the comic looks, in my opinion. But still pretty good looking.

Oh yes! I played Mythos extensively and it was a tragedy for me that they shut it down, this is definately great great news, thanks a bunch Flux!
