Your Picture Guide to Diablo III Gameplay

Posted 9th Nov 2008 08:40 PM by Leord

Did you ever watch slides of family holidays as a kid? Sitting in a dark room seeing your grandfather and grandmother strolling the streets of Cuba, buying you that hollow coconut that’s supposed to be an instrument of some description when used with a stick? Well, if you didn’t you’re probably better off, but Diablo III is different though! Even in stills you have strong poses, powerful impressions and lots and lots of gore. If only I could replace all those hours wasted with Diablo III footage, how my life would have been more… Bloody… raspberry

The Diablo 3 gameplay video from BlizzCon 2008 is full of new interesting details about the game and we have taken the time to snap the most important shots from the clip, adding descriptions of what is actually going on (just like we did with the WWI gameplay and cinematic videos)! A few of the shots are multiple shots of the same spell, chosen to give anyone with limited bandwidth an idea of the spell or effect animations. On that note, I recommend that you use the “Sort By Filename” functionality we have in the gallery, so you can see all the pics in sequence.

Some of the pics from the new gameplay are really something and I recommend everyone to take a look even if you have seen the video to get a a more detailed description of what is actually going on. You’ll find all the pictures in the BlizzCon 2008 Diablo 3 Screenshot Gameplay Gallery. Below are a few examples:

Foober, it shows up a couple of times in the Blizzcon press gameplay video. It’s a very powerful explosion-like effect that damages monsters near the hero. Check out the footage if you already haven’t.

The level up effect is awesome. Also the fact that it not only boosts you (health/mana/fury full) but also does some good damage to enemies around you. If you have any questions of what you see in the pics/video, ask them here, or the upcoming D3 fansite Q&A;chat =)

About that level up effect…I hope there is some lore or w/e behind the visual event on leveling up. I’m not impressed by just having a big light show for no apparent reason.

There really is no lore behind getting a hp/mana fill by level up, and probably quite hard to really explain health globes as well. Some things are added to an action rpg game to increase gameplayability, and it’s usually all for the best, at least if it’s in a Blizzard game…

But if you want lore, it would be same as mana/hp upgrades, that you reached a new level of understanding of the universe, and increased in power. It’s just a bit more *physical* in this war with Diablo. smile

@stillman

lols, i’ll give you a good lore explanation, so ... ahm ahm .. “stay a while and listen” ^_^

Since World Stone was destroyed things have changed ( it was made in the first place to suppress the humans and limit their power growth so the the Nephalem/ first humans don’t grow into powerful beings )

Now unlike before whenever a human “levels up” during combat things go boom boom with strong explosions and blinding colorful lights testament of how powerful humans have become ... maybe we should be glad the World-stone got destroyed ... *evil laugh* XD

Hehe, lol. Well, it isn’t actually something you should discount. It could very well be a bit like that =)

It would be awsome and fits the lore better if different classes have different lvl-up animation. WD could be a combination of his swarms (frogs, locust, spiders) that spreads around him in a big circle. Barbarian could be the summoning of ancient ancestors spirits to join you for a few seconds. Wizard could keep the big explosion thingie smile

Actually, that would be a very cool idea, actually. I can see the advantage of all being same, so you instantly recognize it, but I suppose some minor animation differences could both bring a lot of flavour as well as coolnessfactor to the equation!
