Jay Wilson Video Interview

Posted 22nd Aug 2008 03:12 PM by Flux

The first video interview of Jay Wilson @ GC is now online on our parent site IncGamers.com. It’s just 7 minutes, and is packed with good stuff

In the interview Jay talks about his past jobs in the gaming industry, the D2 team guys working on D3, struggles they’ve had with game and art design, and art design, and art design, and art design. Have you heard that there was a controversy about the art design? No? Well, this interview will fill you right in.  Jay does elaborate on two art changes they’ve made based on fan feedback; they’re going back and making a lot of the dungeon environments grittier and bloodier, and they’re not going to fade out all of the corpses after battles now; just some of them. Many will remain on the ground until the characters leave the area. Also he confirms that there will be cinematics for D3, at least as many as there were for D2, and that the teaser we saw from WWI was pieced together from several of the longer cinematics we’ll see in the final game.

Jay also says they’ve got big plans for D3 info releases at Blizzcon, but he’s not allowed to say what they’ll be, or if D3 will be playable at the event.

Remember that you can read all Diablo Interviews, Previews and Panels from the Diablo 3 Media Coverage.

Must Blizzard keep us on pins for every announcement? Even the content of their own gaming convention? Guys; it’s sold out and tickets are going for 5x face value on ebay; it’s not like people are going to cancel their reservations if you tell us what we will or won’t see there, more than a couple of weeks in advance.

This makes me want Diablo 3, SO BAD. Not that I didn’t want it bad before, but damn, I REALLY want it BAD now.

The comment about making it a deeper word got me excited. Just like how Warcraft 3 deepened that ore and made it so much more open. Greeeeaaaat!

Wait, Flux, I thought you said it’d be playable at blizzcon?

Really sweet on the mention of more grit in the dungeons and longer lasting corpses.

I am also super excited that they are taking the concerns to heart. Adding more grit and gore to the dungeons and the corpses staying longer. Very cool. Glad that they will tweak things. Cool stuff.

I think they’re making the right art decision now - make the dungeons and similar areas dark and gritty, while at the same time ensuring that outdoor areas are visually striking and epic in scale - such as Arreat Summit or the Frozen Tundra in Diablo 2.

I’m assuming it’ll be playable at blizzcon, since that’s kind of the whole point in that convention; hundreds (thousands?) of playable machines set up on the floor. It would be bizarre to have all of those for SC2 and WoW, but none for D3. But clearly they’re not going to commit to that yet, or are saving an official announcement about it for some later, more media-hungry date.

Probably a playable D3 and new classes. Don’t really see what else it could be… but I am open for surprises.

Well, I truly hope it’s playable. I regrettably can’t attend myself but about ten of my friends are and I told them I want info, and lots of it. :D
